Abstract

Operating rooms are high-stress environments where patient safety must be ensured at the highest level and multidisciplinary teams work together.

In this environment, communication within the team is one of the most important factors that directly affect the success of the surgical process. Effective communication helps to prevent errors, manage operation processes more efficiently and protect patient safety by increasing the cooperation of team members. However, communication in the operating room can face various barriers. The hierarchical structure can make open communication difficult due to status differences between team members.

Lack of communication between surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals can lead to important information being overlooked or misunderstood.

Time pressure and the need for rapid decision-making may lead to rushed communication, resulting in information gaps. Differences in technical terminology can also trigger misunderstandings between team members. Stress, fatigue and distraction can negatively affect communication and pose a risk to patient safety. In addition, insufficiently developed communication skills may lead to lack of trust among team members and lack of cooperation. It is of great importance to implement certain protocols in operating rooms to strengthen communication. Structured communication techniques such as SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) minimize communication errors by systematizing information transfer. The use of surgical checklists is another important practice that strengthens communication within the team. In addition, the use of clear, open and respectful language by team members creates an environment of trust and strengthens communication processes. Regular simulation trainings enable teams to communicate more effectively in times of crisis. Active listening makes it easier for team members to understand each other, while feedback mechanisms can prevent possible misunderstandings.

With the development of technology, digital solutions such as electronic patient record systems and voice command systems also facilitate communication in the operating room. In conclusion, effective communication in the operating room is one of the key elements that strengthen intra-team collaboration and increase patient safety. In order to prevent errors caused by communication deficiencies, operating room teams should receive regular trainings and healthcare institutions should develop policies to strengthen communication.  When a clear, open and trust-based communication culture is established, surgical processes will proceed more smoothly and patient outcomes will improve. Therefore, promoting effective communication in the operating room environment should be considered a critical requirement for the safety of healthcare professionals and patients.

Continuous improvement efforts for communication processes and strategies that increase intra-team coordination will strengthen operating room dynamics and improve the quality of healthcare services.
