Antibiotic Use İn Children İn Türkiye: A Systematic Review

Abstract
Objective: This systematic review aims to present the current situation in Türkiye by comprehensively evaluating cross-sectional studies investigating parental behaviors and awareness levels regarding antibiotic use in children.
Methods: The study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Studies published between 2016 and 2026 were searched in the TR Dizin, ULAKBİM, DergiPark, National Thesis Center, and Google Scholar databases. Studies conducted in Türkiye, designed as cross-sectional research, and addressing antibiotic use, knowledge, attitudes, or awareness in children were included.
Results: A total of 6 studies were included in the analysis. The findings indicate that inappropriate practices among parents are common, including the use of antibiotics without a prescription, discontinuation of treatment before the recommended duration, and the use of antibiotics for inappropriate indications. Although a certain level of awareness regarding antibiotics was observed, this knowledge often did not translate into appropriate antibiotic use behaviors. Health literacy, educational level, and socioeconomic factors were identified as significant determinants of antibiotic use behaviors.
Conclusion: Parental knowledge and behaviors regarding antibiotic use in children in Türkiye appear to be insufficient. In the fight against antimicrobial resistance, approaches aimed solely at increasing awareness are not enough; comprehensive interventions targeting behavioral change are needed.
